In 2006 I acquired my first Labrador Retriever. Although I had owned several dogs throughout my life, this breed was different and special to me. In years to come, my Labradors would prove to be my saving grace through an extremely difficult time in my life. Then, bring me full circle to meet some of the best and dearest friends I have ever known.
As I was looking for my 2nd Labrador, I was referred to Nancy Frederick with Texas Moonlite Labradors. Nancy had a beautiful yellow litter that I came back to see every weekend until they were old enough for me to take one home. #2 was Nellie, now 10 years old. A couple years passed and I remained in contact with Nancy. I was always intrigued with her participation in the AKC conformation show ring. One day I received a phone call Nancy’s Grand Champion had a litter sired by an AKC Nationally ranked boy, MBISS GCH/Can CH Sunnydaze Running Across The Miles (Miles). This litter was beautiful and I was offered one of the pick females as a show prospect. I couldn’t say YES fast enough!! Penny was #3. Penny was my first show girl and wow did I start learning FAST! I was addicted to these intelligent, eager-to -please, beautiful dogs and knew I wanted to make a difference. I just wasn’t sure at the time how to go about that. I was continually seeking knowledge in every form available. Then came another girl from Nancy, my #4 Lily. By this time, I was very active in the AKC conformation show ring. I had learned a lot and met some of the most influential breeders in Labrador history. I asked questions, and they graciously answered, one even sat down with me and drew detailed pictures of proper structure of a Labrador so I could get a better understanding. Then there were inherited diseases to learn and test for. My understanding grew of WHY reputable breeders who study pedigree’s, test for the proper genetic diseases, breed to correct temperament and structure AND commit themselves to making the breed even better were my kind of people. THAT is what I wanted to do!
I prefer to be active with my current Labrador Retrievers and only breed periodically. In the spring of 2017, I bred Lily X GCHB CH Barton Creek’s Night Moves. This litter produced my first bred-by AKC Grand Champion of whom I am so very proud – GCH CH Honey Hollow’s Whiskey River. Whiskey is an active show dog competing and finished his Grand Championship at 19 months old! My 2nd finished Champion, CH Barton Creek’s Bailey’s On The Rocks (Bailey) is co owned with Danna Hancock of Barton Creek Labradors. I am planning two litters in 2020. One for Lily in the spring and one for Bailey early summer.
